FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT AXS BUTTONS AND LEDS

The AXS buttons and LEDs on your derailleurs, shifters, and controllers serve several purposes. Get to know the simple yet important functions of the buttons, plus the meanings of the LEDs on your AXS components.

1. SHIFTING YOUR DERAILLEUR

Pressing the AXS button on a derailleur will actuate a shift. On a rear derailleur, one press will shift it outboard to a harder gear, while two quick presses will shift it inboard to an easier gear. The front derailleur will automatically shift into the other chainring with a single press.

TECH TIP: Should a shifter battery die mid-ride, use the AXS button on your derailleur to shift into a comfortable gear to get you home. Just make sure to pedal your crank by hand to move the chain into the desired cog before you hop on your bike and start pedaling.

2. CHECKING BATTERY STATUS

Check the battery status on your AXS components with a single press of the AXS button. The LED near the button will light up green, red, or flashing red to indicate remaining battery life.

DERAILLEUR BATTERIES

  • Green = up to 100% battery charge remaining
  • Red = 10-25% battery charge remaining
  • Flashing Red = less than 10% battery charge remaining

SHIFTER BATTERIES

  • Green = 6-24 months
  • Red = 1-6 months
  • Flashing Red = less than 1 month

3. PAIRING COMPONENTS

When pairing AXS components, you’ll also be using AXS buttons and their LEDs as part of that procedure. The pairing process allows your components to communicate with each other to execute your commands. Pairing is simple and does not require use of the AXS App.

4. USING THE AXS APP AND UPDATING FIRMWARE

Each of your AXS components has individual firmware that periodically should be updated to optimize your AXS system’s performance and add new features. You’ll use the AXS App, AXS buttons, and LEDs for a handful of steps when updating firmware.

  • When you use the AXS App to update your AXS components’ firmware, you’ll use AXS buttons to authorize your device when you connect it for the first time.
  • When you then initiate a firmware update, you’ll be prompted to press and release the AXS button to start the update on the respective component.
  • The LEDs on your components will illuminate orange/amber when you connect to the AXS App and during firmware updates.

5. PROTECTING YOUR DRIVETRAIN

Is your LED flashing red and green? This indicates that your derailleur is protecting itself by rejecting a shift that could negatively affect your drivetrain.

  • To prevent cross-chaining on a 2x drivetrain, the rear derailleur LED will alternate red and green when preventing a shift into the 10T cog while riding in the small chainring.
  • On any AXS drivetrain, the LED on the rear derailleur will also display these red and green lights when shifting is blocked to prevent motor damage in extremely cold temperatures.
