Trek-Segafredo’s Richie Porte had won the Tour Down Under stage on Willunga Hill for six consecutive years but, until now, had only taken the GC crown once. To open the 2020 WorldTour season, the Australian was not first up Willunga, but used a strong team performance to clinch the overall victory.
Determined to follow Ruth Winder’s success in the women’s race with a win of their own, the Trek-Segafredo squad, including World Champion Mads Pedersen, worked hard for all six stages to control the race and keep Porte in contention. Porte initially took the leader’s ochre jersey with a win on Stage 3. Time bonuses in intermediate sprints meant the jersey briefly went on loan to Mitchelton-Scott’s Daryl Impey, but the team worked tirelessly to bring back a dangerous break on the final day. Porte then sealed the GC win with a searing attack up Willunga Hill.
It would have been nice to have been King of Willunga for the 7th time, but I think I will take the ochre jersey any day.
