Digital check

If your Eagle Transmission stops shifting, it’s probably something as simple as a derailleur battery that needs charging, a controller battery that needs to be replaced, or a system that needs to go through the pairing process.

Check the battery status by pressing the AXS button on the derailleur and the controller. No light? That battery is out of juice.

Tech Tip: For best performance, choose replacement CR2032 controller batteries without a bitter child-safe coating ring. This ring can cause interference between the battery and terminal, resulting in potential performance issues.

If the batteries have power, re-pair the entire system (including any new AXS components) to make sure all parts are communicating.

Tech Tip: In case of a dead AXS Pod Controller battery out on the trail, use a quick single or double click of the derailleur’s AXS button to initiate a shift to a suitable gear. Single click for harder, double click for easier.

To further optimize shift performance or eliminate unwanted rasping sounds, adjust the rear derailleur trim position using MicroAdjust™. This feature compensates for the subtle variations that can occur at the hub.

Tech tip:  Less is more. MicroAdjust one click at a time until performance is optimized.

Barrel adjustment

If your shifting is less than perfect, use the barrel adjuster to add or remove cable tension until your upper pulley is centered under the correct cog.

  • Turning the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise in one click increments will add tension and move the pulley inboard.
  • Turning clockwise will remove tension and move the derailleur outboard.

Impact reset

If your shifting hasn’t improved after fine-tuning, follow these troubleshooting procedures:

1. Derailleur Reset: If the derailleur has moved in relation to the knurled ring.
2. Knurled Ring Reset: If both the derailleur and knurled ring have moved in relation to the frame.
3. Reinstallation: If the shifting is still unresolved, remove the derailleur and mounting hardware, then carefully reinstall them.

1. Derailleur reset

The Full Mount on your Eagle Transmission is designed to rotate in the event of frontal impact, moving your derailleur away from danger. A simple trailside reset may occasionally be required to re-align your derailleur’s position. There are two ways to perform the reset: 1. By hand or 2. Utilizing the rear axle.

What to look for: if you’ve struck your derailleur, verify that the knurled ring mark is aligned with the mark on the full mount. If misaligned, a trailside derailleur reset is required. Try resetting by hand before resetting with the axle.

Tech tip: If you need to reset the system with the axle, do not loosen the 8 mm derailleur mounting bolt, especially while the axle is under torque. You only need to loosen the axle for the derailleur reset.

2. Knurled ring reset

If the shifting performance of your Eagle Transmission suddenly goes from good to bad, and the marks on your derailleur and knurled ring are aligned according to the Derailleur Reset above, confirm if the derailleur and knurled ring have rotated in relation to the frame.

To check:

  1. Shift the chain to the setup cog. Identify your setup cog here.
  2. Put the derailleur into Setup Mode by extending the cage slightly and pressing the Cage Mode button to engage the cage at the A / B key lines. A lot of slack in the chain indicates that the knurled ring and derailleur have slipped in relation to the frame.

To reset the knurled ring:

  1. With the chain in the setup cog and the derailleur in Setup Mode, loosen the thru-axle one full turn.
  2. Loosen the derailleur mounting bolt one full turn so that the knurled ring is no longer tight against the frame.
  3. Pull the lower pulley toward the back of the bike to remove slack from the chain, then tighten the derailleur mounting bolt to 35 N⋅m.
    1. If the knurled ring is slipping or rotating while tightening the mounting bolt, the mounting bolt threads may need grease. Loosen and remove the mounting bolt, grease the threads, then repeat step 3.
  4. Tighten the axle to torque.
  5. Check the shift performance.

Tech tip: The derailleur must be torqued to 35 N⋅m to keep it positioned correctly in relation to the cassette for optimal shifting performance.

3. Still not shifting smoothly?

If your Eagle Transmission still isn’t shifting well, confirm that the derailleur setup position is correct in relation to the cassette—this is essential for the system to shift properly. Eagle Transmission’s all-new, simplified setup procedure is a radical departure from previous drivetrain systems—carefully reperforming the setup procedure will solve most shifting symptoms.

Confirm the required chain length, Setup Cog, and Setup Key position for your bike by checking the Full Mount Chain Length Guide or in the SRAM AXS App. For bikes that include an idler pulley, please use Idler pully information instead of using the calculator.

Remove the rear wheel, then loosen and remove the derailleur and bushing frame insert from the derailleur. From there, work through the Hang and Tighten procedures found in the user manual links below, starting at the Install the Bushing Frame Insert step to make sure your Transmission is set up correctly.

Rear derailleur rebuildability

T-Type derailleurs have an unmatched level of rebuildability. While they can't quite heal themselves after taking a big hit, Transmission derailleurs can be rebuilt with modular replacement kits, including skid plates and cage assemblies, down to the smallest parts.
