Primož Roglič won the 2023 Giro d'Italia with a stunning victory in the Monte Lussari time trial, powering up the gravel slopes to erase a 26" deficit to Geraint Thomas and win the general classification by 14". After an injury-marred 2022, the Slovenian stands atop a Grand Tour podium for the fourth time in his career.
One doesn't win a Grand Tour alone, and Jumbo-Visma is one of the strongest teams in the peloton. COVID interrupted months of planning and necessitated several last minute callups, but the unexpected roster protected Roglič through two weeks of abysmal weather and crashes, ready for the imposing third week in the mountains. Sepp Kuss once again filled the role of superdomestique, helping Roglič limit his losses on the climb to Monte Bondone, pacing him as he scraped back 3" on the legendary Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and keeping him fresh for his stunning time trial win.
Roglič's victory wasn't the only success for SRAM athletes at the Giro. Mads Pedersen of Trek-Segafredo took a brilliant sprint win on Stage 6 in Naples, and Movistar's Einer Rubio put on a climbing clinic to win Stage 13 to Crans Montana. Toms Skujiņš was rewarded for his relentless work with victory in the Intermediate Sprint points competition.
