CLEAN IS FAST AND LASTS

Cleaning will extend your drivetrain’s lifespan while ensuring you get the best performance ride after ride. Keep these tips in mind when routinely cleaning your Apex bike:

• Use a damp cloth to wipe off any dirt and debris from your crank, derailleur, and shifters. Clean the components with soap and water, as prolonged contact with chemical cleaners and solvents can damage components.

• When cleaning your chain, you may use a grease-dissolving agent to remove grit and grime. If you choose to soak it, avoid letting it sit overnight. You must replace the chain’s PowerLock any time you disconnect it.

• Rinse everything thoroughly with water and allow the parts to dry. Then lubricate the chain.

BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS

Brake pads and rotors only take a minute to check every few rides. Conditions and pad compound will affect overall pad life. Grit and grime between the braking surfaces will accelerate wear. Replace brake pads if the total thickness of pad and backing is thinner than 3mm and replace rotors when they measure 1.55mm thick, or less.

All Apex AXS brakes ship with organic pads for the best modulation and quietest braking. Metal sintered pads are a great option for riders in gritty and wet conditions where organic pads may wear more quickly. If you change pad compounds, change the rotors at the same time to prevent noise and ensure the best braking.

Apex AXS brakes are compatible with any series of SRAM road rotor: CenterLine, CenterLine X, and Paceline.

TECH TIP: When replacing rotors, replace the pads as well. Then perform the brake bed-in procedure to gain the most stopping power, reduced brake noise, and long-lasting performance. Avoid handling the pads and rotors with bare hands to prevent contamination of the braking surface and only clean with isopropyl alcohol and a clean rag.

BRAKE BLEED

Brake bleeds refresh the DOT brake fluid in your system. We recommend bleeding brakes once a year to purge any air or moisture in the system, keeping the boiling point at its maximum.

TECH TIP: Using a fresh bottle of DOT 5.1 brake fluid will provide the best results. DOT 5.1 is regulated and can be found at most car, motorcycle, or bike shops.

CHECK FOR CHAIN WEAR

Chains will wear differently depending on ride conditions and cleaning habits, so you’ll want to measure wear with an approved tool and replace your chain when wear is greater than 0.8%.

TECH TIP: When replacing a chain, be sure to size it correctly for optimal shift performance and chain retention.

REPLACING CABLE AND HOUSING

Over time, contaminants will find their way into your shifters’ cable and housing, adding friction and degrading shift quality. If your shifting is much higher effort than it used to be, or shifting to harder gears is sluggish, it may be time to replace your cable and housing. Use a high quality 1.1mm shift cable and 4 or 5mm compressionless housing for best results.
